If you, like me, enjoy learning juicy drama of people who lived hundreds of years ago, This is History: A Dynasty to Die For is, hands down, the best history podcast I’ve come across so far.
Journalist and historian Dan Jones does a brilliant job recounting how King Henry II of England reclaimed the throne that was stolen from his mother, how he married the King of France’s wife (oh, the scandal!), and the massive royal pains (both literally and figuratively) his children were.
Fights, betrayals, over-the-top tantrums, battles, murders, and endless land squabbles—that’s what you’re in for with This is History. On top of Jones’ stellar storytelling, the podcast creators really went the extra mile with music and sound effects that transport you straight to the 12th century.
Once you start listening, you won’t be able to stop. Each season, Jones focuses on a new Plantagenet ruler, from Henry II—who lived for war, wealth, and land—to the final rulers of the dynasty who really put the saying “wealthy grandfather, broke grandson” to the test, and led us all the way to the Wars of the Roses.
Listen to the full saga of the Plantagenet dynasty on Spotify, like I do, or on Apple Podcasts, iHeart, and more.
